"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible."   T. E. Lawrence

In 2001, I (Nathan) moved to Romania to work with orphans. During that time, I met Roxana who, as a Romanian, was working with orphans. In 2005, we were married and, to our delight, our son, Samuel, was born in November 2011!

God’s call to ministry came through the Psalm 68:5: “A father to the God….” This verse reveals God’s character with a clear description of what he is like. Those words shaped our vision for ministry to orphans.

We believe that orphans should be helped in the context of deep, loving, and redemptive relationships. This implies trust, understanding, availability, commitment, a long-term perspective, and on-going connection and support. An orphan is helped when a mature, caring, and informed individual forms a relationship with him or her. It is through this conduit, that God delivers his love to orphans.

This being said, in order to care for 58,000 orphans in Romania, we believe that a movement is needed to encourage and empower Romanians to care for orphans. Starting in 2009, we began exploring how to involve others. This lead us to connect with like-minded leaders in Romania and in 2013, we were part of the founding team of Romania Without Orphans.

My contribution to the movement is to be sure that people who care for orphans are trained to do so with excellence. Working with orphans and the issues of abandonment can be very difficult. Sometimes, it can stir up unresolved issues on the part of the caregiver. At other times, an orphan with unresolved trauma may react in ways that are difficult to understand.

In sending Jesus as Savior, God gave us the very best of heaven. When it comes to caring for orphans, we can offer no less. Orphan care is worth doing, and it is worth doing well. It is not enough to get more people involved if they don’t know what they are getting into and if they are not prepared to deal with the challenges they will face.
